Julia Roberts, still the epitome of romantic comedy

Julia Roberts explains why she struggled with the new screenplays in the “romantic comedy” genre for a long time.

“Pretty Woman”, “Notting Hill”, “My Best Friend’s Wedding” – in the 1990s, Hollywood star Julia Roberts (54) was the epitome of successful romantic comedies. It looks a little different today.

In an interview with the “New York Times Magazine” the actress explained that she would be quite willing to shoot more of these so-called RomComs again. However, for a long time she had not been offered anything that would have been good enough.

“If I read something that I thought was Notting Hill level or My Best Friend’s Wedding level, I would,” Roberts said. But for a long time she was disappointed by the screenplays of the genre. “Nothing like that existed until this film that I just did, which Ol Parker wrote and directed.”

With George Clooney in paradise

“Ticket to Paradise” is the name of the new romantic comedy in which she plays alongside George Clooney (60). The two stars play a divorced couple trying to stop their daughter from marrying a stranger on a trip to Bali. Here, too, Roberts had concerns, as she reveals: “Even then I thought, well, catastrophe, because that only works if it’s George Clooney.” Luckily, he felt the same way about her, Roberts continued.

Time problems because of the children

Her three children also have something to do with the fact that Roberts has generally taken fewer roles for a long time: “Here’s the thing: If I thought something was good enough, I would have done it. But I have for the last 18 years have three children.” With her husband Daniel Moder (53) she brings up the twins Hazel and Phannaeus (17) and 14-year-old Henry. “It really raises the bar because then it’s not just, ‘Is this material good?’ It’s also the mathematical equation of my husband’s work schedule and the kids’ school schedule and summer vacations,” Roberts said.
