The nurse Mario G., now 27 years old, was only a few months at the Munich Klinikum Rechts der Isar in the Corona summer of 2020, mostly at night, in the guard room where the newly operated patients were lying. And usually so full of residual alcohol that he would rather put his feet up and sleep than take care of the patients. If someone was particularly agitated, he would give them drugs that sedated the patient – so severe that two of the newly operated patients died and three barely survived. Among them was the writer Hans Magnus Enzensberger, who died two years later.
When the nurse Mario G. first injected the patient Enzensberger with calming and then stimulating medication in November 2020 and the patient could only be saved with great difficulty, a young doctor became attentive and compared the inexplicable emergencies of the past few months: Mario always had G. Served.
Prosecutors charged the nurse with two counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder of three people. And the Munich Regional Court sentenced the nurse to life imprisonment on Monday morning after a month-long trial and pronounced the particular severity of the guilt. This means that he cannot be released after 15 years. At the same time, the chamber, chaired by Judge Norbert Riedmann, imposed a lifelong ban on nursing. However, Mario G. does not have to be in preventive detention, his lawyers wanted to prevent that at all costs.
Mario G. had openly admitted his actions. He had apologized the first day in court and also the last. In his last word last Monday, he said again: “I’m very sorry.”
But in between he had also declared with straightforward frankness that he didn’t care if someone was injured or even died as a result of his actions. That sounds harsh, he said in the process, but that’s how it was.
