Almost a year after the royal planting call, there are over a million new trees in the UK. Queen Elizabeth II says thank you.

Queen Elizabeth II (95) thanks the “Green Canopy” initiative for the trees planted as part of its platinum anniversary on the last day. The monarch is quoted as saying on the British royal family’s official Instagram channel: “I am deeply touched that so many community groups, schools, families and individuals have made their own contribution to the ‘Green Canopy’ initiative”. She hopes the jubilee trees will grow and thrive for many years so that future generations can continue to enjoy them.

Under the motto “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee” (in English: “Plant a tree for the anniversary”) Britons have planted over a million trees so far. Queen Elizabeth II herself gave the official starting signal in spring 2021. Together with Prince Charles (73), the patron of the campaign, she planted an oak on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

The tree as a sign of hope

“Planting a tree shows that you have hope and confidence in the future”, Prince Charles explained in an Instagram video at the time. He picked up the spade himself and called for people to do the same and put a tree in the ground for his mother’s 70th anniversary.

The royal family also posted a collage of photos on Twitter, which showed the Queen planting trees around the world. According to the caption, more than 1,500 copies were collected during the reign.
