The life of Juan Carlos I provides plenty of tragedy: Born far from home in exile in Italy, raised by Spain’s dictator Francisco Franco to be his governor and finally went down in history as the bringer and savior of democracy. A heroic epic until then. But the rise of the king to a folk hero was followed by a very deep fall: Juan Carlos first stumbled over affairs with various women, then investigations into tax evasion, corruption and money laundering followed. Scandal piled on scandal. The biggest of all: Spain’s former king enjoys immunity by law and cannot be prosecuted for any of the allegations.
