Joy for Toulouse, regrets for Rennes

A draw, a victory, a defeat. While Marseille was joined by Brighton after leading by two goals, Toulouse won at home (1-0) against the Austrians of Linz on Thursday, on the occasion of the 2nd day of the Europa League. Rennes, on the other hand, lost 1-0 to Villareal, with many regrets, notably on a missed penalty in the 90th.

TFC scored the only goal of the match after half an hour of play with an opportunistic strike from Chilean international fullback Gabriel Suazo (31st). After the draw (1-1) gleaned in Brussels against Union Saint-Gilloise on the first day, the Toulouse residents occupy second place in the group behind the English Liverpool who signed a second consecutive victory by imposing at the same time at home against the Belgians (2-0).

On the next day, October 26, TFC will challenge the Reds in their legendary Anfield den.

Terrier misses for Rennes

Rennes, for their part, lost 1-0 at Villarreal after missing a penalty and multiple clear chances.

The newcomers Gouiri and Kalimuendo (64th) did good for the Rouge et Noir, bringing percussion and dynamism, half an hour of play after the Norwegian Sorloth opened the score with a dry strike (36th).

The match got carried away in the last 20 minutes: in the 76th minute, the Villarreal goalkeeper threw himself at Kalimuendo’s feet and the referee whistled a penalty. But, after video verification, he reversed his decision. Rebelote in the 90th but this time the penalty was validated… but not transformed: Terrier came up against Reina (90+2).

With this defeat, Rennes, who beat Maccabi Haifa 3-0 in the first match of Group F, finds themselves 2nd behind the Greeks Panathinaikos.
