Journalists renew the strike, a fourth Sunday without publication

This Sunday again, the readers of the JDD won’t find the weekly on newsstands. And for good reason, the drafting of Sunday newspaper renewed its strike to protest against the appointment of Geoffroy Lejeune, far-right columnist and former managing editor of the magazine Current values. This is the fourth time that the newspaper will not appear since the start of this wage movement.

“For us, employees and collaborators of the newspaper, it’s heartbreaking, but it does not undermine our determination”, indicated Saturday the Society of Journalists of the JDD on Twitter after having voted 96% for the continuation of this strike which began on June 22.

Geoffroy Lejeune, close to Eric Zemmour

The LDS of JDD entered its 23rd day on Saturday, and is due to continue on Sunday and Monday, the newspaper’s traditional break days. “The editorial staff will meet on Tuesday to decide on the continuation of the movement,” added the Society of Journalists. The movement was started on June 22, in response to the appointment of Geoffroy Lejeune as editorial director.

This arrival makes the strikers fear a radical change of editorial line, this journalist having directed for seven years the weekly Current valuesto bring it closer to the ideas of Éric Zemmour, far-right presidential candidate of 2022.

Under the control of Vincent Bolloré

The strikers and the owner of the JDDLagardère, discuss without reaching an agreement on the two demands, “to renounce the appointment of Mr. Lejeune” and “to offer the editorial staff guarantees of legal and editorial independence”.

THE JDD, founded in 1948, must pass in October at the latest under the control of Vivendi, the group of billionaire Vincent Bolloré, after a successful takeover bid for Lagardère. Thursday evening, the daily The world affirmed that Lagardère envisaged, without waiting for this deadline, the opening of a “departure counter” which would allow journalists refusing this new shareholder to leave the editorial staff with a financial agreement.
