Josef E. Köpplinger’s “Magic Flute” at the Gärtnerplatztheater Munich – Review – Munich

While Mozart’s “Magic Flute” in the fairytale setting by Jürgen Rose has delighted young and old at the National Theater since 1978, the Gärtnerplatztheater is already in its fourth new production: a version for children was followed in 2000 by Franz Winter’s austere, strict version. Ten years later, Rosamund Gilmore took part in dancing. Now director Josef E. Köpplinger has adapted his version, which was released in Dresden, for the Gärtnerplatztheater. A lot is probably different, but Sarastro is the same since his debut in this role in 1991 and as in the film adaptation by Kenneth Branagh: René Pape!
