Eintracht Frankfurt – Bayern Munich 0: 1 (0: 0)goal: Sané (71.)
It was finally Leroy Sané who found a way past Kevin Trapp. The Munich team now know the Eintracht goalkeeper quite well, in the first leg the native of the Saarland saved almost everything and in the end Frankfurt won 2-1. Also this time the goalkeeper had his scenes, albeit a painful one. Kingsley Coman hit him in the head from close range in the 40th minute, Trapp was treated, was able to continue and in the second half prevented Robert Lewandowski from scoring, among others. He was powerless only against substitute Sané, who was staged by a nice pass from Joshua Kimmich.
It was the only goal in a game in which many more goals could have been scored – also for Frankfurt. Early in the game, Filip Kostic missed what was perhaps the best opportunity for Eintracht, which gave the Munich team a duel at eye level for long stretches. Before the game, as at the other games, there was a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the war in Ukraine – “Stop it, Putin!” was written on the scoreboard in Frankfurt and on the advertising boards.

On the recommendation of the DFL, all Bundesliga clubs demonstrated that this was not a match day like any other before kick-off with a minute’s silence in which they expressed their solidarity with Ukraine, which was under attack from Russia. There was another special feature in Leverkusen: Bayer 04 did not play carnival music on Carnival Saturday. According to the club announcement, “various entertaining points should be omitted”. Nevertheless, the favorite provided football entertainment.
From the beginning only the third in the table played. Leverkusen coach Gerardo Seoane had changed five positions compared to the 3-2 win against Mainz and it was not surprising that the newcomers became the protagonists of the game: Paulinho was constantly dangerous and made it 1-0 by defending himself accidentally kicked the ball into his own hand (which is now allowed again according to the rules). Lucas Alario, Patrik Schick’s replacement, scored. Moussa Diaby made it 2-0 almost alone. And that was the end of the game.

The mood in Mönchengladbach was oppressive for several reasons before kick-off, there was also a minute’s silence for the U23 footballer Jordi Bongard, who died in a car accident during the week. The sport, so beside the point. But it soon got emotional: Wolfsburg’s Sebastiaan Bornauw cheered provocatively after his 2-0 goal, goalkeeper Yann Sommer got upset and saw a yellow card.
It remains a complicated season for Gladbach. Although Adi Hütter’s team played evenly in the first half, they defended carelessly. Wolfsburg could have led higher at the break, Maximilian Philipp shot over it alone in front of Sommer. But because Wolfsburg often looked like wild birds at the back, apart from the strong goalkeeper Koen Casteels, it remained exciting: Maxence Lacroix saw red when he was the last man to simply take the ball in his hand – apparently in the firm and false conviction that he had been fouled be. Outnumbered, Breel Embolo nodded the ball over the line after a well-measured cross from Alassane Plea. And it remained dramatic until injury time: Matthias Ginter’s supposed winning goal was disallowed because of a foul in the making.

The penalty that led to Freiburg’s early lead was disputed at least once. Linus Gechter, 17-year-old central defender at Hertha BSC, didn’t hit the ball, but it was very questionable whether he hit Robert Sallai so hard that he had to go down with a lot of woe. Referee Sven Jablonski whistled, the video referee did not intervene, Vincenzo Grifo converted confidently.
Hertha, who weren’t as badly hit in terms of personnel as they were a week ago, still had to put the second substitute goalkeeper in the goal in Marcel Lotka. Tayfun Korkut’s team had several chances to equalize, Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken had to show one of his better games. The late goals from Kevin Schade and Lucas Höler skew the result a little in favor of the sports club, but Freiburg remains at the top, currently even in a Champions League place, Hertha in direct view of the relegation zones.

It was the beginning of a big sigh of relief for Union, who lost every game after Max Kruse’s departure. But a dream goal from Sheraldo Becker (dribble from the right, shot into the far corner from 18 meters) and finally the 3-0 by Taiwo Awoniyi after Dominik Kohr was sent off (two yellow-worthy fouls in two minutes) secured the Köpenickers their first win after three defeats.

“Make fasteLOVEnd, not war”, the away fans wrote on a poster. With the appropriate symbolism, they are also justifying in Cologne these days that they are celebrating carnival in the middle of Europe despite a war. Some disguised FC fans traditionally do this on an away trip – these days there is usually enough to do in the cathedral city itself without a home game having to be organized as well. In terms of sport, even if that still sounds like a high-spirited joke from a Büttenrede, for FC in Fürth it was about catching up with the European Cup.
The bottom of the table stole the Cologne team but deserves two points. In the second half, Cologne scored the opening goal according to the game shares, but a cross ball from Florian Kainz hopped untouched into the far corner of the goal. But Griesbeck equalized with a header after a corner kick.
