In a first vote on the new party leader of the Conservative Tories, six candidates prevailed. The favorite is former finance minister Sunak. On November 5, the successor to ex-party leader Johnson should be known.
Six candidates have advanced to the next round in the race to succeed Boris Johnson as leader of the British Conservative Party and Prime Minister.
Ex-Finance Secretary Rishi Sunak, Secretary of State for Trade Penny Mordaunt, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, MP Kemi Badenoch, Foreign Affairs Committee chief Tom Tugendhat and General Counsel Suella Braverman prevailed in the first vote in the Tory group. Ex-Health Minister Jeremy Hunt and Finance Minister Nadhim Zahawi, on the other hand, did not make it past the hurdle of at least 30 votes.
Sunak currently favourite
Ex-Finance Minister Sunak is currently the favorite to succeed Johnson. With his resignation last week, he helped Johnsons announce his retirement.
The next vote is scheduled for Thursday. In each subsequent round, the last-placed player is eliminated. Voting in the Conservative faction is expected to continue in the coming days until there are only two candidates left. These should then face a runoff election of around 180,000 party members nationwide over the summer.
New Premier until September 5th
A Johnson successor is to be chosen on September 5th. Johnson resigned as party leader last week under massive pressure from his parliamentary group and cabinet. The prime minister had previously faced one scandal after another. However, he intends to remain in office until a successor is elected.
