On Wednesday’s witness stand, a broken-looking Johnny Depp spoke about the low point of his life: his drug rehabilitation in the Bahamas. To get off drugs, he went to what was his most private place, his own island. He traveled there in 2014 with a mentor and a doctor, but also asked Amber Heard to accompany him so that she could support him.

Visibly touched, the Hollywood star described the terrible pain that plagued his body and for which he was given medication. Funds that Amber Heard had at his disposal. “The withdrawal symptoms kicked in and I said to Ms. Heard, ‘I need the meds now.’ She looked at the clock and said, ‘It’s not time yet,'” Depp said on the witness stand. Again and again Heard is said to have refused him the painkilling and sedative medication because, according to her, it was too early. He tried to explain to her that it wasn’t about timing, that he needed the means to get through the withdrawal symptoms.

“I hate to say it and I hate to admit it, but I think that was the low point in my life, that was the low point (…) because I had to say, ‘Please, please, can I have the meds? ‘Cause it’s really starting to hurt.’ And she was adamant, ‘No, it’s not time, it’s not time,'” he recalled her words. He also described rolling off the couch in tears. “I begged another human being to please give me the medicine that would set me free and she wouldn’t, she was adamant,” he said.

The actor had already spoken about his drug addiction last Tuesday. “It was basically just self-medication,” he said. “You want to escape from your own brain, your own head.”
