John McLaughlin repeatedly retreats into the partial shadow of the stage and listens to his band, smiles, and conducts a few parts. He is the master and, even at the age of 81, still one of the music world’s official guitarists, whom his colleagues look at and the amateurs express their admiration in astonishment. But he also knows that it is a gift to have lived a long life filled with great music.
