Nothing in his career indicated that John Eastman would suddenly rise to such fame. But now Donald Trump’s lawyer has emerged as the central figure in the January 6 hearings. Just as itinerant preacher Rasputin whispered crazy ideas to the Russian tsar, Eastman fed Trump ideas in December and January 2020 on how to justify staying in power. “A coup in search of a legal theory,” a federal judge later commented.
