The opposition US Republicans are pushing ahead with their plans for impeachment proceedings against President Joe Biden and are targeting the business of his son Hunter. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, directed a committee on Tuesday to “initiate a formal impeachment investigation.” Biden knew about his son’s business activities abroad and “lied” to the population about it, said McCarthy.

The Republican spoke of allegations of “abuse of power, obstruction and corruption.” Formally launching an investigation into Biden is the “next logical step” so that the House of Representatives can gather “all the facts and answers.”

Biden administration criticizes Republican plans as “extreme politics at its worst”

The White House immediately condemned McCarthy’s announcement, calling it “extreme politics at its worst.” Republicans in the House of Representatives have been investigating Biden for nine months and have been unable to find any evidence of wrongdoing by the president.

Republicans have been considering impeachment proceedings against Biden for some time – but they themselves are divided on this issue. Impeachment requires a majority in the House of Representatives, which the Republicans have.

If the House of Congress votes for impeachment in the plenary session, this would lead to an impeachment trial in the US Senate. Its members could then remove the president from office with a two-thirds majority. However, given the Democratic majority in the Senate, this is more than unlikely.
