STORY: US President Joe Biden has urged American voters to take a stand against extremism in November’s midterm elections. Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of the republic, Biden said in a prime-time speech in historic Philadelphia, considered the birthplace of American democracy. Biden used the term “MAGA Republicans” to describe supporters of former President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda. They are ready to overturn democratic elections and want to take the US back in time to a time without abortion rights, privacy, contraception or same-sex marriage. “As I stand here tonight, equality and democracy are being attacked. We’re doing ourselves a disservice by pretending it’s different.” The Philadelphia speech marks an intensification of Biden’s campaign speeches ahead of the November midterm elections, in which Democrats could lose narrow majorities in Congress and Senate. Biden recently described Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda as “semi-fascism”. Republican leader Kevin McCarthy accused Biden of ignoring crime and inflation and dividing the country. Instead of trying to bring the country together to solve these challenges, McCarthy said Biden chose to divide, humiliate and denigrate the populace.
