Jewish life in Germany – media

The Jewish New Year festival Rosh Hashanah begins this Friday evening, the Jewish Cultural Days come to an end in Berlin and the German-Jewish football club TuS Makkabi Berlin is playing for the DFB Cup for the first time.

There are enough reasons to report on the everyday life of Jews in Germany. And yet many of them have the impression that the reporting about them is almost exclusively about Holocaust remembrance and anti-Semitism. These are of course important topics, but they only show a small part of Jewish life here in Germany.

The view of newspapers, broadcasters and online formats on the approximately 220,000-strong Jewish community in Germany is nowhere near as broad as it could and should be. In addition, images and language that fuel anti-Semitic prejudices appear again and again in quality media. What picture do the media paint of the lives of Jewish people in Germany? Which events are covered intensively and which are barely reported on?

The communication scientists are discussing this Nadia Zaboura and SZ journalist Nils Minkmar. The journalist is a guest Ronen Steinkedomestic political correspondent for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and author of the book “Anti-Semitism in Language”.

“quoted. der medienpodcast” is a cooperation between the CIVIS Media Foundation for Integration and Cultural Diversity in Europe and Süddeutscher Zeitung, supported by the Mercator Foundation.

The next issue will be published in 14 days, on Thursday, September 28, 2023.
