Whether it’s the North Sea, the Amalfi Coast or Mallorca – numerous popular beaches will be visited by animals this summer. Why is that and what you should do if you encounter a jellyfish.
For more than 500 million years, jellyfish have been an integral part of the marine ecosystem, where the gelatinous animals occupy a special position: They manage without a heart, brain or bones, survive even under the most adverse conditions, and some species fascinate with their colorful play of colors – they have the ability to bioluminescence, i.e. glow from within. Nevertheless, the coelenterates are not welcome on holiday beaches, especially since they have been appearing in masses more and more frequently in the North Sea and Baltic Sea as well as on various shore regions in the Mediterranean region for several years. In many places, the animals become a real nuisance – for vacationers, fishermen, hotels. But why are they multiplying so much in the first place?
