Jean Petit, former international and legend of AS Monaco, died at 74

The principality’s football club mourns one of its legends. Jean Petit, former player and coach of AS Monaco, died Tuesday at the age of 74, the Monegasque club announced.

“AS Monaco had the immense pain of learning of the death of Jean Petit, former player and coach, legend among the legends of AS Monaco,” writes the club on its website.

An entire career in Monaco

Born in Toulouse, Jean Petit spent his entire career in Monaco, guided in his early days by attacking midfielder Omar Pastoriza (1972-1976). He was “one of the best players in the club’s history, winning titles on numerous occasions: champion in 1978 and 1982, winner of the Coupe de France in 1980”, underlines the Monegasque club.

International A (12 caps) having played in the 1978 World Cup with the Blues, he was elected best player that same year by France Football.

After his playing career, he held numerous positions within AS Monaco: recruiter for the training center, for the professional team, member of the technical staff, video analyst, assistant, interim head coach and advisor to the president. Jean Petit will thus become the faithful deputy of Arsène Wenger, Jean Tigana, Claude Puel, Didier Deschamps, Ricardo and Marco Simone.
