The jazz musician Ernst-Ludwig “Luten” Petrowsky is dead. He died on Monday at the age of 89, as his wife, the singer Uschi Brüning, confirmed on Tuesday to the German Press Agency. Petrowsky was one of the most influential personalities in the jazz scene in East Germany and beyond. The saxophonist, composer and author came from Güstrow in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. Last year he was honored for his life’s work with the German Jazz Prize. The jury found that he had set milestones in the international jazz scene like no one else from the GDR. Petrowsky also set special accents in the collaboration with his wife Uschi Brüning. Born in Leipzig, she is also considered a jazz icon. Last year she accepted the German Jazz Prize on behalf of her husband.
