Bundesliga club Mainz 05 is taking the expected step after a negative series and parting ways with head coach Jan Siewert. The coach was only in office for a short time.
Out for Jan Siewert as head coach at Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05: The penultimate league team, which has been winless for eleven games, released the 41-year-old from his duties on Monday, as the club announced on Monday. They want to go into the Bundesliga season finale with a new coach. Siewert only took over the position from Bo Svensson at the beginning of November last year – he then received a contract until June 30, 2026 shortly before Christmas. Siewert’s successor is to be presented on Tuesday afternoon, as the Rheinhessen announced.
“We expressly thank Jan for his commitment. He took on the task at a difficult time with a lot of passion and meticulousness and gave the team good impetus with his work,” said sports director Christian Heidel. However, these were not reflected in a fundamental trend reversal or in results. “Instead, the situation in the relegation battle has gotten significantly worse for us in the last few weeks.” The change in the coaching position is now the necessary step in order to “bring about a positive turnaround”.

Siewert thanked him for his time at Mainz 05, which was a special club for him. “Together with my coaching team, I did everything I could to ensure that the club could stay in the league, but unfortunately we also lacked the necessary luck. I wish the team and the club all the best – and above all that they can still stay in the league.”
Apart from his first game (2-0 against RB Leipzig), the former coach of Mainz’s second team did not win a game and drew six times.
After the 1:3 at VfB Stuttgart on Sunday, FSV sports director Martin Schmidt avoided a commitment to Siewert and announced a detailed analysis. “We’ll sit down together calmly and see what the next steps are. We have to change something, that’s clear,” said the Swiss. “It’s clear that we obviously can’t continue playing like this. We need victories.”

The Mainz team is threatened with their first fall from the upper house since their promotion in 2009. They are already nine points behind the first non-relegation place, which Union Berlin occupies. There is a four-point gap to the relegation place with 1. FC Köln.
The 05ers have had great coaches like Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel in the past. But even Svensson, who saved Mainz from relegation in 2021 and then finished the season eighth in the table, did not become a permanent solution.
