Jamie Oliver on dyslexia: ‘I hated printed words’ – Kultur

“The kitchen saved me,” Jamie Oliver just told BBC Breakfast TV. His school days were difficult, he was diagnosed with dyslexia, i.e. poor reading and spelling. Nevertheless, his worldwide success is based on books: he has sold more than 50 million of them and now he has also published his first children’s book. It’s called “Billy and the Mysterious Giant” and is about three friends who find an enchanted forest. When nature gets out of balance there because of a nasty meat factory, the elves in the forest need help. A pretty, exciting fantasy story with a lot of grounding in children’s everyday life, but which also contains issues close to Oliver’s heart: children with learning difficulties, down-to-earth food and sustainable food production. Jamie Oliver is very cordial on the phone – “Darling!” – and when the connection breaks down, he immediately calls back.
