James Gunn is set to direct Superman: Legacy. The co-head of DC Studios has now confirmed this.

James Gunn (56), co-head of DC Studios since 2022 alongside Peter Safran (57), will take care of the new “Superman” film himself, so to speak. The director of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films has announced that he will also be directing Superman: Legacy. And he says that none of this would have been possible without his late father.

“Yes, I’m directing ‘Superman: Legacy’, due out July 11, 2025,” writes Gunn on Twitter. The film is one of the cornerstones of the duo’s DC plans, with several projects already confirmed. An actor for the main character has not yet been confirmed after Henry Cavill (39) confirmed last December that he would not be returning in the role. In addition to the new “Superman” strip, a DC series in the style of “True Detective” is also planned and another one that is supposed to be reminiscent of “Game of Thrones”.

That’s why James Gunn’s brother Matt cried

“My brother Matt told me he started crying when he saw the release date,” Gunn continues. Unlike his brother, he had not yet realized that the date was his late father’s birthday. “I lost my father almost three years ago,” explains the director. He was his best friend, even if his father didn’t understand him when he was a kid – “but he supported my love for comics and my love for films and without him I wouldn’t be making this film now”.

Years ago, Gunn was offered the opportunity to direct a “Superman” film. At the time, he turned it down because he didn’t have access to a story centered around the character that “felt unique, fun and emotional and showed Superman the dignity he deserved.”

A little less than a year ago he found this approach for himself and sat down to the screenplay. Despite constant requests from others, including Safran, he was reluctant to take on the director’s role. But he loves the script and is now excited to tackle the whole thing.
