Daniel Craig has stepped down as James Bond. But who will be his successor? Producer Barbara Broccoli now gave an insight into the current planning status – and commented on the debate about the next 007.

In the 60-year history of James Bond film adaptations, there have already been several lead changes: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan – all of whom have played the famous double-zero secret agent. So that one Bond goes and the next comes is not unusual within this series.

James Bond: Daniel Craig has resigned

Now the sixth Bond has said goodbye with Daniel Craig last year. But this time the replacement turns out to be a bigger project. Because in the course of his five films, Craig has fundamentally redefined the character of the agent. Driven out his macho, made him more sensitive, a loving partner and even a father. In No Time To Die, 007 literally went out with a bang. And not a few moviegoers asked themselves: what should come after that?

It is therefore not surprising that the producer of the film series, Barbara Broccoli, does not promise a new start anytime soon. The industry portal “Deadline” the 62-year-old said it will be “at least two years” before filming begins on the next film. To the astonishment of many fans, Broccoli announced that the search for a successor to Daniel Craig had not even begun.

This is surprising, given that countless names have been circulating in recent months as to who could embody James Bond in the future, including Idris Elba, Aidan Turner, Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy. “No one is in the running,” says the longtime producer when asked.

Because before you take care of the cast, there is another question. Broccoli speaks of a “reinvention of Bond”: “We think about where we should go with him, we talk through it.” That’s why there’s no script yet.

The producer doesn’t want to be put under pressure during the process: “We’re reinventing who he is, and that takes time.”
