The Brazilian president revealed on Saturday what he sees for himself in his crystal ball. During a meeting with evangelicals during a visit to Goiania, in central Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro declared that he had three alternatives for his near future: “To be imprisoned, dead or victorious”.
“You can be sure that the first alternative does not exist. I do the right thing and I owe nothing to anyone, ”said the president, who is seeking re-election in 2022, according to statements reproduced by the local press. In a context of tensions with the judiciary, Jair Bolsonaro also attacked once again the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), and warned: “No man here on earth will go. intimidate me ”.
Several investigations opened
The head of state suffered a setback on Wednesday, when the President of the Brazilian Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, rejected his request to initiate impeachment proceedings against Alexandre de Moraes, one of the eleven judges of the STF, and member of the TSE. The dispute began several months ago, in particular because of Bolsonaro’s questioning of the legitimacy of the Brazilian electronic voting system, in place since 1996.
The Supreme Court has opened several investigations against the head of state. Earlier this month, Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered the president to be investigated for “defamation” and “incitement to crime”. The TSE also included the president in an investigation opened in 2019 by the STF into offenses and threats against several of its judges.
“Everyone has to buy a gun”
On Friday, before going to Goiania, Jair Bolsonaro encouraged the population to arm themselves: “Everyone has to buy a rifle. An armed people will never be enslaved, ”he declared. And as inflation sparks more and more concern in the country, he added, “I know it’s expensive. An idiot might say “you have to buy beans”. My boy, if you don’t want to buy a gun, don’t mind those who want to buy one ”.
On Saturday morning, in the state capital of Goiás, the president walked without a mask among a crowd of supporters outside the temple, according to images posted on his social networks. He then called from the stage on the evangelicals, who largely contributed to his election, to participate in the demonstrations of support planned for September 7, the date of the commemoration of Independence Day.
