“It’s not revenge” … Beaten in the municipal elections in Strasbourg, Alain Fontanel sets out to be a deputy

How will Strasbourg vote in the next legislative elections? Rather like the recent first round of the presidential election? Or rather like the municipal elections of 2020? In both cases, Alain Fontanel will not present himself on conquered ground.

The former first deputy of former mayor Roland Ries announced last weekend his investiture for Renaissance in the 1st district of Bas-Rhin. That is, roughly, the enlarged center of the Alsatian capital. “One of the hardest because Jean-Luc Mélenchon had made 36% (35.48%) there on April 24”, estimates the candidate, who therefore hopes to succeed the current deputy of the presidential majority, Thierry Michels.

Two opponents already known

“It was when he announced a few weeks ago that he did not want to continue that I made my decision”, resumes Alain Fontanel, long announced future mayor in 2020. Before suffering a heavy defeat against the ecologist Jeanne Barseghian. “It’s not revenge. I don’t confuse the deadlines”, he still assures, he who had never before embarked on a quest other than local.

The Macronist candidate already knows two of his opponents: the former departmental councilor Eric Elkouby (without label, ex-Socialist Party) and Sandra Regol (New popular ecological and social union). “I saw that she had changed her place of residence yesterday on the networks by putting Strasbourg and no longer Paris. I remember, however, that she presented herself in Alfortville (Val-de-Marne) in 2020 for the ecologists. She must not be from here…”, tackling Alain Fontanel ironically. The campaign is launched.
