Météo France placed ten departments in the north-east of France on “flood” orange vigilance this Friday morning. The North, Aisne, Ardennes, Marne, Meuse, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Moselle, Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin and Ain are affected by the alert. On the other hand, no more department was this morning in orange rain-flooding vigilance. Authorities called for caution, citing many roads cut off to traffic and dozens of firefighters’ interventions. In Meurthe-et-Moselle, the municipalities of Briey, Longwy and Longuyon were particularly affected by the floods: up to 80 cm of water were observed in the streets.
Floods in Germany: The death toll rises, rising to at least 81 dead
The toll of bad weather in Germany climbed to at least 81 dead, following the announcement Friday of 50 deaths in the only region of Rhineland-Palatinate, in the west of the country, one of the most affected by the floods. Many people also remain missing in the west of the country, raising fears of an even heavier toll. “I fear that we do not see the full extent of the disaster in the coming days,” Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Thursday evening from Washington, where she is paying a visit.
