No country in Europe has more speed cameras than Italy – there are more than 11,000. Anyone who is flashed here should no longer get a photo in the future. Just the fine notice. Reason: protecting privacy.
In order to protect privacy, speed camera photos from speed traps will no longer be sent in Italy. This emerges from a new decree from the Ministry of Transport. According to this, drivers and motorcyclists who were driving too fast should only have a fine notice delivered to their home.
Also applies to foreign holidaymakers
The evidence photos from automatic cameras, which also show faces, remain with the authorities. They should only be used if speeders object. The regulation also applies to foreign holidaymakers who were caught on Italian roads. According to a report in the daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, the decree has already been approved by Italy’s data protection authority.
Unpleasant situations through photos
In Italy – as in other countries – in recent years it has repeatedly happened that traffic offenders have been put in unpleasant situations by speed camera photos because other people could be seen in the photos who perhaps did not necessarily have to be in the car.
Italy has more than 11,000 speed cameras – more than any other European country. For comparison: in Germany there are around 5,000.
