“Serious meteorological crisis” in Italy – several people die in floods

There had already been severe storms in Italy last week, like here in Lecco in the north of the country

Italy suffered from drought and heat in the summer. Now the storms are increasing. Several people lost their lives in floods on the Adriatic coast.

New, severe storms in Italy: According to the authorities, at least seven people died in heavy rain and flooding on the Adriatic coast of the Mediterranean country. In addition, other people were missing in the Marche region, including a child, as the Ansa news agency reported on Friday night with reference. The Ancona provincial government said the flooding was a result of the afternoon’s persistent rains.

Marche President Francesco Acquaroli wrote on Facebook that the “very serious meteorological crisis” in the region is a cause for extreme concern. On Thursday, civil protection called on residents of the coastal town of Senigallia north of Ancona to seek out higher-lying areas in view of the flooding.

After Italy had experienced a heat wave and drought in spring and summer, precipitation and storms have recently increased – especially in the northern regions.

Violent storms previously also on Lake Garda in Italy

At the end of last week, the north of Italy was hit by severe storms, and a tornado was sighted on Lake Garda. Amateur videos showed the hurricane building up over the lake and then dissipating after a few minutes. People also observed a tornado in front of the port city of Civitavecchia northwest of Rome.

Heavy rain and hailstorms also fell on Lake Como in the Lombardy region last week. According to the fire brigade, they had to go out on 50 missions. Massive amounts of water, rubble and mud flowed through the village of Blevio, penetrating into houses and cellars.

Take a look at the photo gallery from our archive: A series of tornadoes killed many people in the USA last year. More than 70 people died in the state of Kentucky alone.
