Italy’s trade unions are dissatisfied with Prime Minister Meloni’s economic policy. Now they are calling for protest. Those affected include local and air traffic, but also schools and hospitals.

With a general strike, Italy’s trade unions have mobilized against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government, which has been in office for a year. In addition to trains and local public transport, schools, hospitals, highways and airports were also affected. The state airline Ita said it had to cancel at least 20 flights.

The strike is directed overall against the economic policy of the government under Prime Minister Meloni, leader of the right-wing national party Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy). The unions’ demands include wage increases to compensate for inflation and the introduction of a state minimum wage.

Disabilities in local transport

In Rome and other large cities there was a minimum supply of metros, buses and trains during the morning rush hour. Nevertheless, there were significant disruptions. It was initially unclear to what extent the strike calls were followed in other areas.

The coalition of three right-wing parties will have been in office for exactly one year this Sunday. In the polls, the Fratelli d’Italia are well ahead of the other parties on the left and right with around 28 percent.
