Maria Geiss-Wittmann fought for the rights of pregnant women in the CSU and the Catholic Church for decades. Visiting a woman who, even at 90, still likes to get on men’s nerves.
An old building in Amberg, on the door there is a picture of a small baby hand reaching for a large one. Maria Geiss-Wittmann is already there, a 90-year-old woman whose snow-white hair has been tied into a knot with a clip. As a greeting, she gives you coffee and pastries as if it were still her office. As if her cardigan were still hanging over the chair, as if she were still advising pregnant women every day at “Donum Vitae” who don’t know whether they want to stay pregnant. She has been retired for around twenty years. Whereby pension. That doesn’t exist for people with a mission. She’s just about to start when the door opens.
