Israel, the unfinished state – Opinion

The country is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its founding and can look back on an enormous success story. But what is missing: a constitution that secures democracy – and with it everything that has been achieved so far.

On Tel Aviv’s magnificent Rothschild Boulevard stands the Shrine of the State of Israel: a chunky, two-story structure where David Ben-Gurion solemnly established the Jewish state on May 14, 1948. The house then became a museum, a much-visited place of Israeli self-affirmation. But on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the state, which according to the Jewish calendar falls on April 26, i.e. this Wednesday, the historic building is a construction site, scaffolded for core renovation. You can see that as a metaphor.
