It’s no wonder that teachers are overwhelmed when it comes to the topic of the Middle East conflict: the state of Israel is hardly taught at German universities. It’s time to change that.
When journalists repeatedly confuse Israelis and Israelites, when teachers are overwhelmed when it comes to explaining the background to Israel’s existence, and when politicians have to call for people not to stir up hatred of Jews at anti-Israel demonstrations, then this is also a result of the deficiencies of the German education system. It is not enough to point fingers at radicalized Israel-haters. It is also of little use to accuse them of a lack of knowledge. Where, one wonders, are they supposed to get their knowledge from?
