Islamophobic and racist leaflets have been distributed in Bayonne (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) for several weeks, the migrant aid collective Etorkinekin Diakité denounced in a press release on Wednesday.
The leaflets, entitled “Warning to Muslims and other Islamists living or currently in the Basque Country”, are signed by the hand of a mysterious small group which calls itself “The Franco-Basque Catholic Resistance”.

They were distributed to the mailboxes of residents of the ZUP (priority urbanization zone) of Bayonne as well as in the city’s bus network, AFP learned from the association which denounced these leaflets. .
In the text, the authors promise “war” on Muslims who “refuse” to “assimilate”. “We will expel you from the Basque Country, from France and from Europe, as Charles Martel did in Poitiers in the year 732,” they add again.

The authors of the leaflets, a double-sided page long, also call for a boycott of a Bayonne bakery which employs a veiled woman.
The Etorkinekin Diakité collective obtained the support of several local political parties, unions and associations, who co-signed the press release released on Wednesday. According to Amaia Fontang, member of the board of directors of Etorkinekin Diakité, the association plans to file a complaint.
