Isère: a man killed after threatening the gendarmes with a cutter

A 49-year-old man was shot dead by the gendarmes after threatening them with a box cutter overnight from Friday to Saturday in Isère, said the Grenoble prosecutor’s office.

According to the first elements of the investigation, a family dispute would be at the origin of the drama. An elderly couple, living in Pierre-Châtel (Isère), called the gendarmes when their son had just threatened them with a box cutter.

After consuming alcohol, he allegedly tried to kill them before being disarmed by his brother who also lives on the premises.

Once there, the gendarmes discovered the family barricaded in their house. The assailant then emerged with his weapon and threatened the police before being shot.

“Despite several warnings to drop his weapon, the individual continued to advance towards the soldiers who, with their backs to a fence and unable to retreat, used their pistol to protect themselves and stop their action. They each fired at least one cartridge and hit the individual in the chest,” said prosecutor Éric Vaillant.

The man died of his injuries. He was unfavorably known to the gendarmerie and justice services, in particular for aggravated violence, outrage and degradation.

An investigation has been opened.
