Munich is a city of water. Streams run through Munich above or below ground, fountains gush in numerous places or water fountains shoot into the sky. In the south there are the large lakes, in the north, east and west small quarry ponds, which are almost as popular with Munich residents. The city’s most important waterway, however, has been the Isar since it was founded in 1158.
