Isar floodplains – Greens call for better protection – Munich district

The Greens in the Bavarian state parliament are not letting up in their efforts to have parts of the Isar valley designated as a nature reserve. At the beginning of April, Claudia Köhler and Markus Büchler, together with the Green Party chairmen of the Grünwald and Pullach local groups, Ingrid Reinhard and Renate Grasse, took a tour of the Isar floodplains with area expert Franz Wachtel and environmentalist Manfred Siering to get a picture of endangered biotopes on the Isar Grünwald, now they demand in a press release that all “biotope pearls” of the Isar meadows must be protected, especially from the cyclists who criss-cross the sensitive nature.

Siering is quoted in the press release by the Greens as saying: “The authorities seem to have withdrawn here. There are no clearly defined paths. Everyone makes their own way through the forest and, often unwittingly, causes a great deal of damage the plants. Due to the Corona crisis, the pressure has tripled again.” According to Köhler, it could be simple: “Proper signage, educational campaigns on nice weather weekends, wayfinding systems around biologically sensitive areas, regular maintenance of the paths and the presence of rangers on site to remind the unreasonable to keep things in order.”

The district decided eight years ago to apply to the government of Upper Bavaria to designate parts of the Isar valley as a nature reserve. The Greens complain that this has not happened since then and call on all responsible bodies to sit down at the table and look for solutions for a beneficial interaction between nature conservation and leisure use.
