Is a new dissolution of the National Assembly possible after the summer?

Sunday evening, the President of the Republic exercised one of his prerogatives by deciding to dissolve the National Assembly. A decision taken after results in the European elections which showed a strong surge in the National Rally (RN) and a weakening of the presidential party.

Political life was turned upside down with legislative elections organized within just three weeks, on June 30 and July 7. Can we relive this situation in the near future, when there have been five dissolutions since 1962?

One year between two dissolutions

In the rules of the constitution of the Fifth Republic (article 12), the dissolution of the National Assembly cannot intervene less than a year after the legislative elections : “a new dissolution cannot be carried out in the year following these elections”. Clearly, there will be no possible dissolution by the President of the Republic before the summer of 2025, more precisely before July 7, 2025.

The legislative and presidential election calendars find themselves disconnected after this dissolution. For them to coincide again, the next president would have to decide, upon his election in 2027, to dissolve the National Assembly again.
