Israel destroyed an Iranian consulate building in the Syrian capital Damascus. Two Iranian generals were among the dead. Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Khamenei once again announces consequences.

Nfter the attack on an Iranian embassy building in Damascus, Iran’s spiritual leader said Israel would be “slapped” for it. “The defeat of the Zionist regime in Gaza will continue (…),” said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a speech. “Desperate efforts like the ones they made in Syria will not save them from defeat. Of course they will also be slapped for this action.”

Iran and its allies blamed Israel for an airstrike on the consular building of the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Wednesday that the death toll had risen to 16. According to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, seven of its members were among the dead, including two senior representatives of the Quds Force, which is responsible for foreign operations.

Iranian state media reported that the funeral ceremony for the slain Revolutionary Guard members was scheduled for Friday. Friday is also Quds Day, when many Iranians are expected to demonstrate in support of the Palestinians and against Israel.

Khamenei called on the population to take to the streets. “If in previous years Al-Kuds Day was celebrated only in Islamic countries, this year it is most likely that Al-Kuds Day will also be celebrated in non-Islamic countries,” the spiritual leader said. He hopes for a day when “the Muslim world can celebrate the destruction of Israel.”

Since the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, Quds Day has been celebrated every year on the last Friday of the fasting month of Ramadan. Al Kuds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem.
