According to state media, at least 15 people have been killed in a terrorist attack in the Iranian city of Shiraz. Dozens of other people are said to have been injured at the Shiite pilgrimage site of Shah Cheragh, state television reported.

According to reports, the victims were pilgrims and site workers. “A terrorist” attacked the place, said the head of the local judicial authorities, Kasem Mousavi, on Iranian state television. A man with “connections to ‘Takfiri’ groups” was arrested, it said. The term “Takfiri” is used by the Iranian authorities to refer to Sunni jihadists.

IS claims attack for itself

The terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack on a Telegram channel. There had been speculation on social media as to whether this could be a state-controlled action to distract from the current protests in the country. A secret list previously published by hackers suggests that.

In Afghanistan, for example, the Sunni jihadists repeatedly carry out attacks on Shiite Muslims, whom they describe as apostates from Islam and despise. Such attacks are very unusual in Iran. In April, however, an attacker stabbed two clergymen at the Imam Reza shrine in Meshed, which is considered the most important Shia shrine in Iran.

President Ebrahim Raisi condemned the attack and, according to the Office of the President, announced a consistent response.
