Iran protests: Young Iranian women tell why they are protesting

A young and above all female generation in Iran is challenging the old rulers. Here some talk about their fear, their sadness – and their hope.

If Mahsa has learned anything in the past two weeks, it’s that fear cannot be conquered. Only control. The other day was such a day again. She had been to the Brandenburg Gate with a couple of Iranian friends. Demonstration against the regime in Tehran, banners and like-minded people. Mahsa had felt brave and euphoric screaming out among thousands of people at the mullahs who let her namesake – Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman – die because of a misfit headscarf. “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi,” Mahsa had shouted. Women, Life, Freedom.
