  • Industry experts expect that USB-C will soon replace the Lightning connector.
  • Apple is said to be already carrying out tests and aiming for the change with the iPhone 15.
  • The company could thus anticipate the planned EU requirements.

According to current rumors, the iPhone 15 will finally put an end to Lightning. Apple has already proven in recent years on the iPad Pro, iPad Air and Mac, among other things, that USB-C is the measure of all things here. Now all devices are apparently to be converted to the connection type, experts predict the change for 2023.

Among other things said industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in a tweet about the upcoming change. Reasons for this include the faster transfer rates and a higher charging speed. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman tests are currently underway.

The change to USB-C would be consistent. Because in addition to speed, the possibility of connecting various devices is a major advantage, which becomes clear with the iPad.

Is Apple ahead of the EU?

Another reason could also be the EU’s plan to standardize charging connections and encourage manufacturers to switch to USB-C. A corresponding draft is already in place, the agreement in the internal market committee of the EU Parliament is expected in May. The new directive could be implemented in the coming years.

According to Gurman, Apple is also testing a new adapter that can be used to continue using old Lightning accessories. This should make the switch easier for Apple users.
