iPhone 15: Bug in iOS 17 prevents data transfer from old device

Buyers who have purchased an iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max since Friday are facing a disturbing problem: the usual way to transfer data from an old iPhone to the brand new device is blocked. The reason is a bug, as Apple itself published in a bug released at the weekend Support document writes – which is already available in German. As a result, the transfer process simply gets stuck at the Apple logo after it has been initiated as usual.

“If you select ‘From Another iPhone’ during setup to transfer apps and data from your previous iPhone to a new iPhone with iOS 17, you may get stuck at the Apple logo,” the company explains. This means: Apparently other devices with iOS 17 are also affected. However, this problem is likely to be rare, as only the iPhone 15 series is currently delivered directly with iOS 17, while all other new devices on the market still come with iOS 16. Only the first version of iOS 17 – or iOS 17.0 – is affected. 1, which may have been included with the iPhone 15. Confusingly, iOS 17.0.1, which was released last week for older iPhones due to an actively exploited exploit, already comes with the fix.

In practice, this means: As soon as you take your iPhone out of the box, you should go through the setup of the iPhone 15 and install all the updates offered before starting the data transfer. Only then should the data transfer begin. For iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, iOS 17.0.2 is the current version. It also contains the (very important) security fixes. You should definitely not bypass the update.

If the transfer process has already been initiated and the iPhone seems to be stuck on the Apple logo forever, you will be forced to reset the device. To do this you need a Mac or a PC with iTunes to which you connect the iPhone using a cable. First, the device must then be put into recovery mode varies depending on the model must be carried out. On the iPhone 15, you briefly press the volume up button and immediately release it. Then you press the volume down button and release it again immediately. Then the side button must be pressed and held.

Then the device restarts and the Apple logo appears. Only when you see a picture of a computer and cable do you release the side button. The iPhone should then appear in Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC). From there the restoration can then be initiated. The necessary update can also be installed during the restore. Once the update is on the device, the transfer process can be started again – even without a Mac or PC.
