iOS 16: Apple throws out more iPhones than ever before

Finally more functions for the lock screen: With iOS 16, Apple not only allows more individuality, but also real functionality immediately after switching on the display.

At the WWDC, Apple presented the upcoming iPhone system iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 for its tablets. Unfortunately, not every user can enjoy the new systems.

As part of its in-house developer fair, the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Apple presented its new operating systems, which bring a whole range of new functions to Apple devices, as it does every year. You can find an overview of the new functions in this article. With iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, however, a lot was sorted out.

Because while surprisingly few devices have often been refused the update to the latest system in recent years, this time the rate has skyrocketed. Five iPhones are no longer supported by iOS 16, which is expected for September. And two iPads also have to do without iPadOS 16.

hard cut

Especially with the iPhone, the cut is less harsh than it actually sounds. The minimum requirement is now an iPhone 8 – which went on sale in 2018. Two years ago, it was expected that support for some of the discarded devices would be discontinued. In addition, two models are only the larger Plus models. All five models were already a few years old: the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus went on sale in 2016, the first generation iPhone SE, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus in 2017. All devices were therefore well over five years old provided with the latest updates.

With iPadOS 16, the evictions are even older: The iPad Air 2 was released in 2014, the iPad Mini 4 a year later. All newer models are included with iPadOS 16.
