Investigations into train chaos between Munich and Augsburg – Bavaria

After massive disruptions and train cancellations in rail traffic between Munich and Augsburg, the criminal police are now investigating. The disruption that occurred on Monday morning is due to damage to a cable duct near Mering (Aichach-Friedberg district). The responsible police headquarters in Swabia North announced on Tuesday that signal and supply lines as well as communication technology were affected. There are indications that a fire had been set in the cable duct. The police did not provide any further details.

On Monday, the Bavarian Regiobahn, which operates regional trains on the route network, spoke in a statement about “vandalism damage in the form of an arson attack”, citing information from DB Netz AG, which is responsible for the route. Trains had to be diverted via Ingolstadt, for example, or were sometimes completely canceled.

While traffic on the four tracks of local and long-distance traffic was still disrupted on Monday, the two tracks of local traffic were open again on Tuesday, according to Deutsche Bahn. “The majority of local and long-distance trains can again roll between Augsburg and Munich,” said a spokeswoman. However, there could still be train cancellations and diversions. The two long-distance tracks should be passable again from Wednesday morning. A total of 15 cables with more than 500 wires had to be replaced.
