The British Ministry of Defense writes that Russian troops are advancing ever closer to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. It is suspected that it is a Russian attempt to encircle the city.

According to British intelligence information, a large Russian military column has partially dispersed north of Kyiv.

This is likely to aid a Russian attempt to encircle the Ukrainian capital, Britain’s Defense Ministry said on Twitter on Saturday. It could also be a Russian attempt to reduce its own vulnerability to Ukrainian counterattacks. These would have already taken a heavy toll on the Russians.

While the fighting continued north-west of Kyiv, the majority of the Russian ground troops are now around 25 kilometers from the center of the city of three million, the ministry said. In addition, the cities of Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Mariupol remained encircled while continuing to suffer heavy Russian shelling.
