Attention Tesla! MG followed up its study with action and launched the Cyberster, an exciting classic roadster that, with 544 hp, completed the standard sprint from zero to 100 in three seconds.
Car fans have always associated sleek sports cars with MG. After the British brand was sold to China a few years ago and is now part of the SAIC Group, there was not the resurrection in the form of a classic roadster that fans had hoped for. The company management bowed to the zeitgeist and brought SUVs like the MG4 Electric to Germany, which certainly found their fans. Now, almost in time for the brand’s centenary next year, the makers are listening to the pleas of the fan community and are putting a classic roadster on wheels with the MG Cyberster. And all electric.
There will be two versions of the MG Cyberster: The entry-level version as a single motor with 230 KW / 313 HP on the rear axle. The top model has a brute total output of 400 kW / 544 hp in the form of all-wheel drive. The two-seater fueled in this way should complete the standard sprint from zero to 100 km/h in around three seconds and probably be up to 210 km/h. With the standard range, a good 480 kilometers should be possible. With the CATL battery packs on board, the entry-level version weighs around 1,850 kilograms, while the all-wheel-drive vehicle is already scratching the two-ton mark at around 1,985 kilograms.
With a length of 4.53 meters, a width of 1.91 meters and a height of 1.33 meters, SAIC design director Carl Gotham has also managed to create a classic two-seater in terms of looks and not an elephant with a fabric hat. The proportions are correspondingly elegant: The MG Cyberster has a roadster-typical long, flat bonnet, simple, curved lines that do without excessive showmanship and a streamlined, optimized rear that follows the specifications of the German aerodynamics pioneer Wunibald Kamm.
Two high-swinging gullwing doors give access to the modern cockpit, where one immediately notices a two-horn yoke-style steering wheel. This suggests a steer-by-wire concept. According to MG, the roadster will be equipped with “state-of-the-art driver assistance systems”.
