Interview with Stefan Herheim and Tobias scratch. The directors become artistic directors – culture

They are two of the most successful opera directors at the moment, each of them has put on a sensational production in Bayreuth, “Parsifal” and “Tannhäuser”, and yet they now also want to be opera directors. Stefan Herheim, born in Oslo in 1970, is directing the Theater an der Wien in its second season, Tobias Scratch, born in Landshut in 1980, will take over the opera in Hamburg from 2025. This places them in the illustrious small circle of directors, which includes legends like Walter Felsenstein, Harry Kupfer, Jossi Wieler and Barrie Kosky. Herheim is thoughtful, Scratches are exuberant. And yet they have similar reasons for changing careers, although they don’t want to give up directing. The meeting will take place in the Viennese Café Goldegg.
