Interview with photographer and AI artist Charlie Engman

It’s late morning in Brooklyn, which according to the borough’s rules is still sleeping time. “Sorry, was out until six,” says Charlie Engman when he pops up on the video chat. But then he’s wide awake. Engman, born in 1987, is one of the most sought-after fashion photographers because there is no boundary between fashion and art for him. The art world, in turn, has been taking him since his essay MOM serious, a long-term project in which he accompanied, staged and sometimes alienated his mother for ten years. For his new project, he works with the Midjourney program, an artificial intelligence, or AI for short, that generates images.
