Hertha BSC is starting the Bundesliga season with a new type of president: Kay Bernstein, once co-founder and lead singer of the “Ultra” group “Harlekins Berlin”. When he applied to succeed long-standing President Werner Gegenbauer in June, he stood out simply because he wasn’t wearing a jacket over his business shirt, but a blue-and-white Hertha tracksuit jacket. For the interview, he interrupts his family vacation on the Baltic Sea island of Usedom, which coincidentally is also called Amber Island. For several years he has had a permanent pitch on the campsite, the access road is called: Bernsteinweg. His CV states that he trained as an electrician and worked as an industrial mechanic. Today, the 41-year-old is a successful communications and event entrepreneur and is proud that he was able to lead his 13 employees through the Corona crisis. He picks up the SZ at the train station – in an electric Porsche.
