Interview with Eike Schmidt: “I would have liked to remain director of the Uffizi” – Culture

Eike Schmidt, 55, works a lot and long hours. As always, he welcomes the SZ in a blue business suit and tie for a farewell interview late in the evening in the Uffizi. First he leads through the now dark halls. Night at the museum, actually. It goes up and down the stairs to a conference room with a round table and modern video technology. Schmidt sometimes sits here at one o’clock in the morning when there are calls from overseas. The director of one of the most famous and successful museums in the world is in demand internationally. In Florence, however, there is one on call, it will end at the end of the year. Time to look back and look ahead.
