The Mexican Guillermo del Toro won the Oscar for best director in 2017 for the love story “The Shape of Water”. His new film is called “Nightmare Alley” (theatrical release: January 20). The noir thriller is the film adaptation of a novel from 1946. It is about the showman Stan (Bradley Cooper), who develops fairground tricks into professional frauds – until a particularly insidious plan becomes his undoing. Del Toro joined in for an interview from his home in Los Angeles. The 57-year-old’s study is paneled with dark wood, with bookshelves, skulls and small anatomy dolls in the background. The Californian morning light falls through narrow windows and ivy tendrils.
